I come from the Dawoodi Bohri Community. We are Indian Muslims with an ancient Yemeni thread. One million strong across the world with a big chunk in India. One of the most interesting feature of the Bohri culture is our food and it’s dining etiquette and our ‘no food waste’ philosophy.

Inviting people to your home for dinner has always be part of our DNA. A Thaal dinner is organised on every monumental occasions of our lifetimes. Such as birth, birthdays, wedding,  house warming, religious events and even death. Every significant moment of a Bohri Life  is marked by a Thaal Dinner!

“Thaal Dinners are central to our Bohri way of life.

It’s in our DNA.”

Thaal dinners are not only done on special occasion, it is the traditional way of dining in a Bohri home during breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. Everyday home dinners would not have the sweet and savoury dishes but only the main dishes would be served. A typical home meal would be chapati, rice, 2 types curries, one meat and the other vegetable, side dishes of salad, chutney and acar.
